Our next concert in Hull Minster showcases two modern pieces, Magnificat by familiar composer John Rutter and Requiem by Christopher Wood, who will not be so familiar to most.

Wood’s inspiration for this piece was the show of emotion following the death of the Queen Mother in 2002. The Requiem he was inspired to write is a beautiful work with some lovely melodies, celebrating the life of a much-loved national icon. It was first performed in December 2012 in London and our performance will be its East Yorkshire première.

Rutter’s Magnificat was first performed In New York in May 1990 and since then has featured regularly in choral concert programmes around the world. The words of the Magnificat, or Song of Mary, are well known; Mary is praising God after learning she is going to give birth to Christ. Rutter’s version also includes settings of a 15th century English poem Of a Rose, a Sanctus and a Sancta Maria. 

Both works have a joyful and uplifting quality, something that is much needed in the present climate. Our performance will help to celebrate and remember lives, of those we have lost, those still with us and those still to be born.

Unfortunately, owing to the ongoing pandemic we are unable to offer refreshements at this concert, although we invite you to bring your own. As such there will be shortened interval of approximately 10 minutes.
